Gary Chapman

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gary Chapman is a minister, counselor, and author of the Five Love Languages series. He is the director of Marriage and Family Life Consultants, Inc.

Gary Chapman also has a radio program on marriage that airs on over 100 stations. Gary Chapman is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute and holds a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree from Wheaton College and Master of Arts (M.A.) degree in anthropology from Wake Forest University. Gary Chapman also received Master of Religious Education (M.R.E.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.Gary Chapman is also the senior associate pastor at Calvary Baptist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Gary Chapman joined the staff in 1971 and shares the responsibilities of teaching and family care. Dr. Gary Chapman regularly speaks during the Sunday morning worship services. Gary Chapman is an intellectual Bible teacher who uses a singular wit and dry humor in his teaching style.

Gary Chapman is perhaps best known for his concept of “love languages,” which posits that every person feels most loved when love is expressed through one of five modes: words of affirmation, quality time, gifts, acts of service, or physical touch. Gary Chapman argues that while each of these modes is enjoyed to some degree by all people, a person will usually prioritize one mode over the others and will not feel as loved if the love is not expressed in that “language.”

The first of many books promoting this concept was The Five Love Languages: How to Express Heartfelt Commitment to Your Mate, published in 1992. The book has sold over 3 million copies in English — having been translated into 33 other languages[1] — and the 1996 edition consistently ranks in the top 100 sellers on Amazon.com, ranking in the top 50 as of February, 2007. Since then, Gary Chapman has gone on to apply the concept in additional books focusing on children, singles, men, and teenagers, and the topics of God and apology.

Don Miguel Ruiz

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Don Miguel Ruiz (born 1952) is a Mexican author, nagual, shaman, and teacher.Don Miguel Ruiz went to medical school and was a surgeon until a near-death experience impelled him to seek answers in ancestral traditions of the Toltec in which his mother was a curandera (healer), and his grandfather a nagual (shaman) who, after death, continued to teach Ruiz in his dreams.

Don Miguel Ruiz most famous and influential work, The Four Agreements, was published in 1997 and has sold around 4 million copies. The Four Agreements advocates personal freedom from agreements and beliefs that we have made with ourselves and others that are creating limitation and unhappiness in our lives. Ultimately, it is about finding one’s own integrity, self-love, and peace within this reality. The Four Agreements are:

  • Be Impeccable With Your Word.
  • Don’t Take Anything Personally.
  • Don’t Make Assumptions.
  • Always Do Your Best.

Don Miguiel Ruiz also wrote a workbook as a companion to The Four Agreements. He then wrote several other books, including The Voice of Knowledge, Prayers, and The Mastery of Love. In Beyond Fear, by Mary Carroll Nelson, he discusses some of his beliefs through a series of interviews, including his belief in the legend of Atlantis; his belief that the sun entered its sixth age on January 11, 1992, which should lead to a new age for humanity; and his belief in the spiritual power of the pyramid of the sun at Teotihuacan.

He can speak English. He often lectures and leads retreats in the United States. Many of his students are American. In 2002 he suffered a massive heart attack, but has since recovered. He has handed the Eagle-Knight lineage over to his son Don José Luis.
