"Home Work" is not just mindless execution of a said task. When Homework is assigned during the learning years, little does one realize the presence the true wisdom that begin to surface much later in life ... where there is no one to monitor our homework, when our performance reflects on the amount of effort we put in towards "our" Home work.

There is no question in my mind that learning directly from your own experience is the best, all 'round way to learn. In my view, the value of learning from others' experiences is overrated.
